Can You Swim After Getting a Tattoo? Wait Times & Tips

What Is the Swimming Rule for a New Tattoo?
A new tattoo is an open wound in the top layers of your skin. Swimming soaks that wound in water that carries bacteria, chlorine or salt. Most artists ask clients to avoid pools, the sea and hot tubs for two to four weeks after getting a tattoo.
At Sutran Tattoo, we plan around this rule with every traveller. We ask about your beach dates before we confirm a session. Then we suggest a schedule that keeps both the trip and the tattoo safe.

How Long After a Tattoo Can You Swim?
Wait until the skin has fully closed over. For most small and medium pieces, that takes two to three weeks. Large pieces, colour packing and heavy shading can need four weeks or more.
The surface should no longer peel, shine or feel tender. If you still see flakes or raw patches, the tattoo is not ready. A simple test helps here. Run a clean finger over the area. It should feel the same as the skin around it.
Why Swimming Too Early Is a Problem
Infection risk
Open skin lets bacteria in. Lakes, rivers and the sea carry far more germs than tap water. Pools are cleaner, but shared changing rooms and wet floors are not. An infection can bring pain, fever and a trip to the doctor. It can also leave scars inside the design.
Ink loss and patchy healing
Long soaking softens scabs. Soft scabs lift off early and can take ink with them. The result is light spots or blurred lines. Those areas often need a touch-up later.
Chlorine and salt
Chlorine dries out healing skin. Salt water stings and pulls moisture out as well. Both slow the repair process and can irritate fresh lines.

Pool, Sea, Lake or Hot Tub: Which Is Worst?
Not all water carries the same risk. The table below gives typical waiting times.
| Type of water | Main risk | Typical wait |
| Hot tub or hot spring | Warm water, high bacteria, softened skin | 4 weeks or more |
| Lake, river or pond | Untreated water, mud, parasites | 4 weeks or more |
| Sea or ocean | Bacteria, salt, sand, strong sun | 3 to 4 weeks |
| Chlorinated pool | Chemicals, shared surfaces | 2 to 4 weeks |
| Shower | Low risk if kept short | From day one |
These times are only a guide. Your artist can judge your skin at a check-in.
Can You Shower With a New Tattoo?
Yes. Short showers are fine from the first day. Use lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel.
Avoid long baths until the skin has healed. A bath is also a long soak. The same rule as swimming applies.
Do Waterproof Bandages Let You Swim Sooner?
Clear healing films, often called second skin, are useful in the first few days. They are not made for swimming. Water can creep in at the edges after a few minutes of movement. Sweat and sunscreen also loosen the adhesive.
If you must enter water for work, keep it brief. Rinse with clean water afterwards. Wash gently and apply your aftercare cream.

Planning a Tattoo Around a Beach Trip in Vietnam
Many guests visit Hanoi before heading to Ha Long Bay, Da Nang, Nha Trang or Phu Quoc. The order of your trip matters. If you can, put the beach days first and the tattoo near the end. You can then fly home and heal in comfort.
If you get tattooed early in the trip, plan dry activities for the next two weeks. Old Quarter food tours, museums and cafés are easy choices. Kayaking in Ha Long Bay is not.
Our team can help you work out the timing when you book a tattoo in Hanoi. Share your travel dates in your first message.
What If You Already Booked a Beach Holiday?
You still have options. Choose a smaller design that heals faster. Pick a placement that stays dry and out of the sun, such as the upper arm or the back of the shoulder.
You can also book a consultation now. Then come back for the tattoo after your trip. Many travellers do exactly that.

Sun Protection for Healing and Healed Tattoos
Strong sun is the second big risk on a Vietnamese beach. UV rays fade fresh ink quickly. They can also burn healing skin.
Keep a new tattoo covered with loose clothing until it heals. Do not put sunscreen on an open tattoo. Once it has healed, use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. Reapply it every two hours and after each swim. Our guide on whether tattoos fade explains sun damage in more detail.
Which Placements Need the Longest Wait?
Some areas heal slower than others. Feet and ankles stay close to the ground and often get wet or dirty. Hands are washed many times a day. Ribs, elbows and knees stretch with every movement.
These placements may need an extra week before swimming. The upper arm, shoulder and thigh usually heal more evenly. If a beach trip is close, choose one of these calmer areas.
Size matters as well. A small fine-line piece closes much faster than a full sleeve. Heavy colour work also takes longer than simple linework.
Signs Your Tattoo Is Ready for the Water
Check these signs before your first swim:
- No more peeling, flaking or scabs.
- No shiny or tight patches.
- No redness, heat or swelling.
- The skin feels smooth to the touch.
- At least two weeks have passed, or longer for large work.
If one point is missing, wait a few more days. A short delay costs far less than a touch-up.

What to Do After an Accidental Swim
It happens. A wave hits, or a friend pulls you into the pool. Get out and rinse the tattoo with clean, lukewarm water. Wash it gently with mild soap. Pat it dry and apply a thin layer of aftercare cream.
Watch the area for the next 48 hours. See a doctor if you notice spreading redness, pus, fever or growing pain. Send your artist a photo as well.
Aftercare That Gets You Back in the Water Sooner
Good aftercare shortens the wait. Wash the tattoo two or three times a day. Keep it lightly moisturised, not greasy. Wear loose, clean clothing over it.
Sleep on clean sheets. Do not scratch or pick at flakes. Drink enough water in the heat. Our full tattoo aftercare guide for Vietnam covers each step.

FAQ
Can I swim one week after getting a tattoo?
It is too early for most tattoos. The surface is usually still peeling at one week. Wait at least two weeks, and longer for large pieces.
Is salt water good for a healing tattoo?
No. Salt water stings and dries the skin. The sea also carries bacteria. It does not help a tattoo heal faster.
Can I go to the beach if I stay out of the water?
Yes, with care. Keep the tattoo covered and in the shade. Rinse it gently if sand gets on the fresh skin.
How long after a tattoo can you swim in a pool?
Most artists suggest two to four weeks. Wait until all peeling has stopped and the skin feels smooth.
Can I swim with a healed tattoo in Vietnam?
Yes. Once healed, swimming is safe. Use SPF 30 or higher to protect the colours from strong sun.
