What Is the Best Outfit for a Tattoo Appointment?
The right outfit for a tattoo appointment gives your artist easy access to the placement. It also keeps you comfortable for several hours in the chair. It should be clothing you will not mind getting ink or soap on.
At Sutran Tattoo, we talk about placement before every session. We then tell you what to wear so you are not caught off guard. Below is the same advice we give our clients, sorted by body area.

Basic Rules for Every Tattoo Appointment
These rules work for almost every placement:
- Loose clothes: they move out of the way and do not rub fresh skin.
- Dark or old fabric: ink and green soap can stain.
- Soft, breathable material: cotton and linen work best.
- Layers: you can add or remove a layer as needed.
- Comfortable shoes: you may stand or walk during breaks.
Avoid tight jeans, belts with large buckles and anything you need to pull over your head after the session.
Why Dark, Old Clothes Work Best
Tattoo ink stains fabric for good. A small drop can land on your sleeve or waistband. Artists also use green soap and other solutions to clean the skin. These can leave marks on light colours.
Choose clothes you would wear for painting a room. You will feel more relaxed if you are not worried about a white shirt.
What to Wear for an Arm or Forearm Tattoo
A short-sleeved T-shirt or tank top is ideal. For an upper arm or shoulder piece, choose a sleeveless top. Tight sleeves can roll down and touch the stencil.
After the session, wear a loose sleeve or nothing on the arm. Fabric should not cling to the fresh tattoo.

What to Wear to a Tattoo Appointment for Your Back
Back pieces take longer, so comfort matters even more. Wear a top that opens at the back or a button-up shirt. You can wear the shirt backwards so it covers your front.
For women, a sports bra with front hooks or a strapless bra works well. The artist may still ask you to unhook it for a full back piece. Tell your artist if you want extra coverage. Most studios keep paper towels or clean drapes for privacy.

What to Wear for a Rib, Side or Stomach Tattoo
Wear a loose tank top or a sports bra. Low-waisted, loose shorts or joggers help too. Avoid tight waistbands, because they press on the lower ribs and stomach.
Rib sessions often mean lying on your side. A soft top makes that position easier to hold.

What to Wear for a Leg, Thigh or Ankle Tattoo
Shorts are the easiest choice for thigh, knee and calf work. A loose skirt or dress also works for the thigh. For an ankle or foot tattoo, wear sandals or bring flip-flops.
Skip skinny jeans on the day. You will not want denim rubbing a fresh calf tattoo on the way home.
What to Wear for a Chest or Collarbone Tattoo
A button-up shirt is the best option. You can open it and keep your arms covered. An off-shoulder top also works for the collarbone. Women may prefer a strapless bra or a bandeau.
What to Wear for a Neck, Ear or Head Tattoo
Tie your hair up if it is long. Leave hoodies, collars and scarves at home. Remove earrings near the placement before you arrive.

What to Wear for a Hand or Foot Tattoo
Take off rings, bracelets and watches before the session. Your hand may swell a little afterwards. For a foot tattoo, wear open shoes so nothing presses on the fresh lines.

What to Wear to a Tattoo Consultation
A consultation does not involve needles, so normal clothes are fine. Still, wear something that lets you show the placement. The artist may want to measure the area or place a printed design on it.
Bring reference images and your travel dates. Let the artist know about any skin conditions or allergies. Our guide on what to avoid before a tattoo lists the steps to take the day before.

What to Bring Besides Clothes
Pack a small bag for the day. Bring water, a snack and a phone charger. Headphones help pass the time in longer sessions.
Studios often run air-conditioning, so bring a light jacket that opens at the front. Hanoi winters are also cooler than many visitors expect. If you are on a short trip, our guide to walk-in tattoos in Hanoi explains how same-day bookings work.
Comfort Tips for Long Sessions
Long sessions can last four hours or more. Eat a proper meal before you arrive. Low blood sugar makes the pain feel worse. Wear socks if your feet get cold, even with sandals.
Use the bathroom before the artist starts. Ask for short breaks when you need them. Stretch your legs and drink water during each break. Comfortable clothes make every one of these steps easier.
What to Wear After Your Session
Change into clean, loose cotton if your clothes got stained. Fresh tattoos should breathe. Avoid tight straps, belts or sleeves over the area for the first week.
When you visit our tattoo studio in Hanoi, our artists will explain how to cover the tattoo for the ride home.
