What Is the Tattoo Age Limit in Vietnam?

The tattoo age limit in Vietnam is the minimum age at which a studio will tattoo you. Vietnamese law does not set one, so the limit comes from studio policy rather than a statute. In practice, reputable studios in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City work only with clients aged 18 and over, and they check ID.

This question comes up often, usually from a parent travelling with a teenager or a 17-year-old on a gap year. This guide explains what the law says, what studios actually do at the front desk, and the other rules worth knowing before you book. Nothing here is legal advice. What Vietnamese law says about the tattoo age limit

Vietnam has no statute that sets a minimum age for getting a tattoo. There is no rule that says “18 and over” anywhere in the law. Because there is no age rule, there is also no official procedure that lets a parent consent on a child’s behalf.

A Vietnamese lawyer has made the same point in the press. In 2022, lawyer Le Trung Phat discussed the topic with Thanh Nien newspaper. He noted that no law stops secondary or high school students from getting a tattoo. Schools, however, can still set their own rules for students. This often surprises travellers, because many of them come from countries where the age limit is written into law.

Why studios set the tattoo age limit at 18

Almost every established studio in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City turns away clients under 18, and Sutran is one of them. The reasons are practical rather than legal. They come down to four things.

• Consent: A tattoo is permanent. A studio wants an adult signing the consent form, not a minor who may regret the choice within a year.
• Disputes: A parent who did not know about the tattoo may come back angry. Without a clear law, the studio has little to stand on in that conversation.
• Health history: Adults can answer questions about medication, allergies and skin conditions. Teenagers often cannot answer, or would rather not, in front of a parent.
• Reputation: Studios that tattoo minors get talked about, and not in a good way. Studios that say no keep their standing.

So the rule you will meet at the front desk is 18, with ID. Treat that as the real tattoo age limit in Vietnam for any studio you would actually want to use. A studio that is relaxed about age is usually relaxed about other things too.

Can a parent give consent for a minor?

Not in a way that any reputable studio will accept. A parent’s signature does not change the tattoo age limit at the front desk. Without a legal route for parental consent, a signed note from a parent carries no real weight and does not remove the studio’s risk. A studio that tattoos a 16-year-old because a parent is present is ignoring its own policy. That tells you something about its other policies as well.

If you are a parent, a better path is a conversation about waiting. You could also visit a studio together and talk the idea through with an artist. Several parents have done that with us, and most teenagers come back at 18 with a better design.

What ID a tattoo studio will ask for

Checking ID is how studios apply the tattoo age limit in practice. Every established studio does it before the consultation starts. It takes a minute and is not a sign that anyone doubts you. These are the documents studios usually accept.

• Visitors: your passport, or a clear photo of the data page on your phone. A driving licence that shows your date of birth is usually accepted too.
• Residents: a Vietnamese citizen ID card or a passport.
• Anyone who looks young: expect to be asked even if you are 25. It is routine, not an insult.

Studios record your name and date of birth on the consent form. They do not usually keep a copy of your passport. If you prefer not to hand the document over, showing it at the desk is normally enough.

Are tattoos legal and accepted in Vietnam?

Yes. Tattooing is a legal business in Vietnam, and attitudes have changed a lot in recent years. Visible tattoos are now common on young people in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Older generations can still be reserved, so covering large pieces in temples and government offices is polite.

Do tattoos affect military service?

This topic concerns Vietnamese citizens, not visitors, but you may hear it mentioned. For years, a joint circular from 2016 has linked certain tattoos to military service. It set out which tattoos could stop a citizen from being called up.

The rules focused on visible placements, such as the face, neck and lower arms. Very large pieces and offensive designs were also included. A change to these rules was proposed in 2023, so the details may differ today. Either way, local clients often think about placement more carefully than visitors do.

Are there rules about what you can tattoo?

No specific law lists banned designs for the general public. Studios use their own judgement and will decline hateful symbols, political content aimed at the state, or anything likely to cause the client trouble. Sutran follows the same approach.

Do tattoo studios need a licence?

Can I get a tattoo if I am pregnant or on medication?

Reputable studios will decline to tattoo you during pregnancy. They will also ask about blood thinners, diabetes and skin conditions, because these affect bleeding and healing.
