Moving your appointment

Most studios will move your date once for free if you give enough notice, usually at least 48 hours. The deposit then carries over to the new date. If you need to move it a second time, some studios keep part of the deposit. That covers the slot they lost, so check before you ask.

Cancelling your booking

How to pay your tattoo deposit and final bill in Vietnam

Vietnam is moving quickly towards cashless payment, and tattoo studios have moved with it. Most studios accept more than one method, and many clients use one for the deposit and another for the balance. These are the main options you will come across.

• Bank transfer or QR code. This is the default for locals and for deposits paid before you arrive. The studio sends you a bank account number or a QR image to scan. Services such as Wise or Revolut can send money to Vietnamese accounts, though a transfer may take a day to arrive.
• Cash in Vietnamese dong. Cash is accepted everywhere and is handy for the final balance. Visa and Mastercard work at ATMs in both cities. Local bank ATMs usually let you take out 2 to 3 million VND at a time, while international bank ATMs allow more.
• Credit or debit card. Most established studios take cards at the counter. Some add a small surcharge, often 2 to 3%, to cover bank fees, so ask before you pay.
• Foreign currency. Some studios quote in US dollars for visitors. Paying in VND is usually better, because the exchange rate offered at a counter is rarely a good one.

How to read a tattoo quote before you pay

A proper quote lists exactly what the number includes. When you compare tattoo price quotes from different studios, check each one for the same five items. It only takes a few minutes, and it saves you from surprises on the day.

1. Consultation and custom drawing: are they included, or charged separately?
2. Sessions and hours: how many sessions the piece needs, and roughly how long each one will take.
3. Touch-up: whether one follow-up touch-up is included, and within what time frame.
4. Aftercare products: included in the price, sold at the counter, or something you bring yourself.
5. Card surcharge: whether one applies if you plan to pay by card.

• A deposit request to a personal account with no studio name, before you have even spoken to an artist.
• Pressure to pay the full amount before the design has been agreed.
• No written confirmation of the date, the deposit amount and the remaining balance.
• A quote that changes on the day, even though the design has not changed.
• A price far below every other studio in the city. The saving usually comes from cheaper needles, cheaper ink or a less experienced artist.
